Turkmenistan marks Remembrance Day

On January 12, Turkmenistan marked Hatyra Guni, Day of Remembrance, which was established in memory of defenders of the Goktepe fortress and all heroes of Turkmenistan who died defending freedom and independence of the homeland.

State flags flew at half mast all over Turkmenistan. Commemorative prayers were offered in mosques. Sacrificial meals and public prayers Hatyra Guni were also offered in all cities and villages of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen State News Service (TDH) reports.

According to the established tradition, the main public prayer was offered in Goktepe, at the mosque standing on the site of the Goktepe battle that took place 127 years ago. Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attended the memorial ceremony.

Talking to the district elders after the ceremony, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that a special facility for sacrificial meals with the capacity of 1000 people as well as the Goktepe battle museum would be built near the mosque.
