Turkmen, Iranian presidents believe Caspian status should be defined through consensus among littoral states

Saparmurat Niyazov and Mahmud Ahmadinezhad paid particular attention to the issues related to the Caspian Sea in a Joint Communique on the development of bilateral relations adopted in conclusion of the official visit by the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Turkmenistan yesterday.

In fact, Turkmen and Iranian leaders noted that the Caspian Sea must be a sea of friendship, stability and neighborliness, the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports. The document says that elaboration and adoption of a Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea is the important task of all Caspian states and that all agreements on defining the legal statues of the Caspian Sea should be made by the Caspian states on the basis of consensus.

The Joint Communique says that Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran believe that the soonest establishment of the Caspian Sea status will make it possible to create favorable conditions for the efficient and rational exploration of its hydrocarbon and biological resources, prevention and maintaining the unique ecological system of the Caspian basin.

The importance of the second summit of the Caspian states in Tehran was also acknowledged.
