Turkmen president urges minister of communications to lower tariffs for mobile services
Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov has instructed Minister of communications Resulberdy Khojakuliyev to lower tariffs for mobile services provided by the state operator, Altyn Asyr (Golden Age).
As the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports, at the meeting held yesterday the minister of communications reported to the President of Turkmenistan on the participation of the national mobile services operator in the development of the mobile communications market. In particular, the minister said the number of subscribers to Altyn Asyr services reached 20 000 people, while the number of subscribers to the services provided by Russia’s MTS subsidiary Barash totaled some 90 000 Turkmen citizens.
Saparmurat Niyazov urged the minister of communications “to stay away from hiking tariffs for mobile services” and to establish a combined tariff that would not exceed US $ 10 per annum. According to the head of Turkmenistan, this measure will make mobile services affordable for every citizen of the country. “We should control the tariffs, profits and, if you want to be good to people, make it affordable, Niyazov said. The ministry of communications should adopt a charitable approach and not blindly copy foreign practices.”
