Turkmenistan introduces national GSM cellular communication network

The first 1,500 subscribers have been connected to the national GSM cellular communication network of Turkmenistan.

As the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports referring to the republic’s Ministry of communication, Turkmenistan established Altyn Asyr (Golden Age) enterprise, a structural unit of Turkmentelekom state electric communication company, to develop the national GSM cellular communication network.

In August 2004, Altyn Asyr joined the World association of GSM cellular system operators headquartered in Dublin (Ireland) where TM-Cell national cellular network of Turkmenistan was registered.

Let us recall that American Barash Communication Inc, a long standing partner of Turkmenistan, was the sole provider of the GSM cellular communication services in Turkmenistan.

The ministry also said Siemens AG, one of the world leaders in the field of production of telecommunication equipment, supplied equipment for the national cellular communication network with a total capacity of 50,000 numbers.

Equipment for 25,000 numbers was installed in the Turkmen capital, Asgabat, taking into account that cellular communication service is provided for residents and guests of the capital and its suburbs, including the part of Arcabil, Ak Bugday, Ruhabat, Geogdepe districts and the town of Abadan. According to this project, equipment with an overall capacity of 25,000 numbers will be installed in regional centres and other big Turkmen towns in the nearest future.
