TURKMENISTAN MARKS DAY OF REMEMBRANCE OF THE FALLEN IN WORLD WAR II

As the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports, on May 8 the republic marks Day of Remembrance of National Heroes of Turkmenistan that fell in the 1991-45 World War II.

This memorable day was established by a special decree of President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov in 2000. At the same time, all Turkmen soldiers that fell in the war were declared National Heroes.

On this day state flags fly at half-mast, commemorative dinners (sadaka) are given in all places of the republic and mosques and orthodox churches hold prayers.

In Ashgabat the head of state, other leaders, representatives of public organizations, veterans of war and youth laid flowers to the memorial of the fallen in World War II.

In a conversation with war veterans before a wreath laying ceremony President of state Saparmurat Niyazov announced his decision to allocate $100,000 from the Presidential fund for the needs of the Council of WWII veterans.

On May 9 Turkmenistan celebrates Victory Das as a national day. Flowers will be laid to memorials and monuments to the fallen in WWII, ceremonies of honoring of war veterans and performances of artists and amateur groups will be held all over Turkmenistan.
