Turkmenistan and US agreed to expand cooperation in fight with drugs smuggling, strengthening frontier control and rendering assistance to Afghanistan

Turkmenistan and US agreed to expand cooperation in fight with drug smuggling, strengthening of frontier control and rendering assistance to Afghanistan. During the recent meeting in Ashkhabad between the Turkmen president Saparmurat Niyazov with Gen. Tommy Franks, commander-in-chief of the U.S. Central Command for the Middle East and Central Asia, the sides stressed mutual readiness for further interaction in various directions aimed at strengthening security and stability in the region, rendering support to the government of Afghanistan. “The United States recognizes and supports neutrality of Turkmenistan and it’s independent policy in the region, Franks said. We appraise support, rendered by Turkmenistan to neighboring Afghanistan.

”Tommy Franks also stressed that the US intends to expand cooperation with Frontier service of Turkmenistan, Defence Ministry and other departments. It is ready to assist in technical equipment and staff training.

The Turkmen president in his turn stressed that Turkmenistan considers Afghanistan as friendly state and considers its assistance in establishing peace in that state as one of priorities of foreign policy. “We are ready to keep assisting Afghan people in settling social and economic problems, ready to send our teachers and engineers for construction of schools and hospitals, training of local personnel. Turkmenistan considers the Afghan people as a united nation and stands against its division by ethnic and religious principles,” Saparmurat Niyazov said.
Cosntruction of Turkmenistan-Pakistan gas main via Afghanistan was as well touched upon during the meeting. The sides widely shared the opinion that this project is of big social interest along with financial and economic ones and is able to provide about 12,000 jobs not only on the Afghan part of the main.

On the eve the Turkmen president met with the coordinator on rendering assistance to Europe and Eurasia of the US State Department William Taylor who stated that the US government backs Turkmenistan in its aspiration to built trans-Afghan gas main.

While commenting the possible construction of gas main from Turkmenistan via Afghanistan to Pakistan, the US diplomat announced that “the most important for today is to prove that it is a commercially vital project.”According to Taylor, the US is one of the most active participant of the project of construction of TransAfghan gas main, and the US are expecting for the results of preparation of feasibility study of the project.”
