UN General Assembly passes Turkmenistan-sponsored resolution on transport and transit corridors

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan held a conference on the adoption by the UN General Assembly of Turkmenistan-sponsored resolution “Role of transport and transit corridors in ensuring international cooperation for sustainable development” on 19 December 2014.

The conference was attended by Turkmenistan’s ambassadors to foreign countries, heads of the diplomatic missions and representatives of international organizations accredited in Ashgabat, a number of ministries and departments, universities, public associations, as well as representatives of Turkmen and foreign mass media.

As was noted at the conference, the resolution was co-sponsored by all the countries of Central Asia, most countries of the Asia-Pacific region, as well as countries from Europe, Latin America and Africa - in all 66 states. The resolution was adopted by consensus at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly on 19 December. It was noted that this resolution is the first document of the UN General Assembly formalizing a proposal to establish Global Partnership for Sustainable Transport.

The resolution calls upon the UN Member States and international and regional organizations to further encourage enhancing networking among related stakeholders involved in the development and operation of the international transport and transit corridors. The resolution lays the foundation for establishment of transport networks, including roads and railways, sea and air routes, through intermodal logistics centers and dry ports.

The resolution reflects the key elements of the Ashgabat Declaration adopted in September 2014 that aims at creating an integrated approach to the development of transport and transit communications. The resolution also provides for the mobilization of financial and technical resources from the international monetary and financial institutions. The document invites the Secretary-General to seek the views of the UN Member States and relevant entities of the United Nations system and to communicate such views in a summary report on the ways to enhance international cooperation in this area to the General Assembly at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in 2015.
