Turkmenistan holds military-tactical exercise “Galkan-2011”

The demonstration military-tactical exercise “Galkan-2011” (Shield-2011) involving instructional practice and massive use of aviation, artillery, air defense and tank units and land forces was held in the territory of the mountain training center “Southern Kelyata” of the Ministry of Defence of Turkmenistan near Ashgabat.

As the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat, the President of Turkmenistan, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Army General Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov observed the exercise. He arrived in Akdepe military airfield in the suburb of Ashgabat before the start of the exercise, where he inspected new military hardware, including drones.

Then, the head of state went by helicopter to the training ground, where soldiers of the National Army demonstrated their combat skills. The exercise featured combat helicopters Mi-17, Mi-8 and Mi-24, rocket system Cyclone, complexes Hurricane and BM-21 Grad, anti-tank missile systems Shturm-C and Malyutka-M, tank and motorized infantry forces, as well as units of military intelligence and special forces.

Upon completion of the exercise, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov praised the high level of combat training of soldiers, congratulating everyone on the upcoming 66th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. According to the President, "an unparalleled feat of WWII veterans is an inspiration to the valiant Turkmen soldiers.”
