Turkmenistan to set up private cellular operators

The President of Turkmenistan instructed the Government and the Ministry of Communications of the country to consider the establishment of private mobile communication companies and joint ventures with participation of renowned international communication companies to provide mobile communication services to the public.

“The share of national companies in these joint ventures should be more than 50 percent,” Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said. According to him, “at first, the state will help these companies by providing soft loans to the extent necessary.”

"In order to encourage competition among mobile communication companies, as well as the systematic expansion of scope and quality of their services, especially for the high-speed Internet communications, you should set up at least three independent mobile communication companies,” the president said.

The President also noted the importance of transforming the existing state communications companies currently operating under the Ministry of Communications into private entities. “All newly created companies should get a national title, for example Galkynysh, the Turkmen leader noted. After the opening, they must work in accordance with international standards,” he said.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov instructed the relevant government officials to prepare proposals on this issue and submit them for consideration at the next cabinet meeting.
