GEORGIA PAYS OFF ITS DEBTS BY ... DREDGERS
Tbilisi's debt to Ashgabat can be reduced to US $ 60 million by the end of 2006
New dredgers that arrived recently from Georgia, produced at a shipyard in Poti, will help Turkmen melioration specialists resolve the issue of water supply to virgin lands of Mary province. Georgia's OOO T.G. TRADE acts as supplier. The cost of the contract, including spare parts, is US $ 28,3 million.

Eight powerful machines will soon be sent to subsidiaries of the Ministry of water management of Turkmenistan. 4 more dredgers will arrive in March. In total, Turkmen melioration specialists will get 35 new dredgers supplied by the Georgian side as payment for the Georgia's state debt for Turkmen natural gas supplied in 1993-1994, according to a decree by Turkmen President Saprmurat Niyazov. They will be used at cleaning works of the Karakum-river bed and to increase the stocks of Zeid and Haushan water reservoirs.

Next month, the Georgian company will ship six passenger carriages to Turkmenistan after a major overhaul at the Tbilisi railway-carriage repair plant. 35 carriages have been repaired there in three years. Besides, OOO T.G. TRADE supplies road equipment to the State border service of Turkmenistan. These contracts also come as repayment of Georgia's debts. As is known, Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov, understanding economic problems of this country, adopted a decision to use the production capacity of leading Georgian enterprises to meet the needs of Turkmenistan's economy. Thus, Tbilisi was given the opportunity to repay debts and, at the same time, maintain the pace of economic development of the republic at the expense of Turkmen orders.

The debt has been reduced significantly in recent years. In 2006, the Georgian company plans to supply over US $ 40 million worth of goods to Turkmenistan. In this case the state debt of Georgia to Turkmenistan will be cut to almost US $ 60 million.
