GUIDED BY PRINCIPLES OF MUTUAL RESPECT AND EQUALITY
Chinese Xinhua News Agency comments on the talks between Hu Jintao and Saparmurat Niyazov
BEIJING, April 3 (Xinhua) - Today, in the second half of the day, Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov held talks in the People's Assembly building. The heads of state agreed to further enhance cooperation between the two countries and promote friendly relations in various fields.

The sides expressed satisfaction with the state of bilateral relations during the talks. Hu Jintao said China and Turkmenistan have enjoyed smooth development of bilateral relations since forging diplomatic ties 14 years ago. According to him, constant deepening of political mutual trust, active support to each other on some major issues concerning national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, fruitful cooperation between the two countries in economy, trade, transport, energy and humanitarian spheres, close coordination in international and regional affairs are all evidence of this.

The Chinese side highly appreciates Turkmenistan's support for China on the Taiwan and Tibet issues and respects the path of development chosen by Turkmen people, supports Turkmenistan's neutral policy and its efforts in ensuring state independence and sovereignty as well as preservation of stability in the country and development of the national economy," the Chinese President noted.

Saparmurat Niyazov, in turn, stated that favorable trends have been observed in development of mutually advantageous cooperation between the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations. The agreements reached by the heads of two states last year raised the Turkmen-Chinese relations to a new level, he said.

Niyazov expressed appreciation for China's long-term assistance to Turkmenistan in political, economic and social spheres and reiterated Turkmenistan's firm adherence to the one-China policy.

Hu Jintao stressed that development of friendly relations and cooperation with Turkmenistan on the long-term and stable basis is Chinese government's purposeful policy and that it will never change this policy despite any changes in the international situation.

"In order to jointly promote the all-round development of China-Turkmenistan relations, China is ready to work with Turkmenistan under the principles of mutual respect and equal treatment," the head of state said. In this regard, he proposed to further stick to the principles of mutual respect and equality, to expand mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation in view of the fact that China and Turkmenistan complement each other in market, technology, fund and resources, to boost security cooperation to jointly prevent and combat terrorism, separatism and extremism, to enhance cooperation in culture, education and tourism and to strengthen coordination in international affairs, such as human rights and reforms of the United Nations.

Speaking about further expansion of trade and economic cooperation, Hu Jintao suggested that emphasis should be made on such spheres as transport, energy, chemical industry, telecommunications and textile industries.

Niyazov completely agreed with the Chinese President's suggestions. The development of relations with China which has achieved impressive successes in development of economy and significantly strengthened its international prestige, is in the interest of the Turkmenistan people, he said.

The heads of two states signed a joint statement in the end of talks. They also attended a signing ceremony of seven bilateral documents, including an agreement on economic cooperation.
