SUSTAINABLE GROWTH
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STATISTICS AND INFORMATION OF TURKMENISTAN SUMMED UP ECONOMIC RESULTS OF 2004
Ashgabat released the operative-analytical review of basic social and economic indicators of Turkmenistan for 2004 that prove sustainable positive dynamics of development of the republic's economy.

Cost of Turkmenistan's GDP increased by 21% on 2003, according to the review. At the same time, industrial production grew by 22%, agricultural growth was 20,2% and the construction sector grew by 20,5%. On the whole, GDP in commodity producing industries grew by 21,3% and by 21,5% in the service sector year-on-year.

Processing sectors that grew by 125% in the aggregate ensured industrial growth in the key industry. In the sector of middle and large enterprises the highest growth rate was demonstrated by a group of private enterprises (154%) and enterprises with Turkmen and foreign ownership (146%).

Basic sectors of the national economy - oil, gas, oil refining, light and food-processing industries developed at the high rate in 2004. Thus, based on results of work of the energy complex's extracting structures in 2003, as a whole, the country produced about 10,1 million tons of oil and 58,57 billion cubic meters of gas, of which 42 billion cubic meters were exported. The world market demand for oil products made in Turkmenistan that are the main items of state export conditioned the vigorous growth in their production. In 2004, 6,817,6 million tons of oil were refined.

Production of liquefied gas increased by 22% to 359,6 thousand tons, production of polypropylene - by 14% to 86,1 thousand tons, lubricant oils - 2,4 times to 50,8 thousand tons on the last year.

In 2004, the total amount of industrial production of enterprises of the Ministry of power engineering increased by 20% on 2003. The ministry controls two independent industrial structures, Kuwwat corporation and Turkmenmashingurlushik concern, that raised their production by 19% and 25% respectively. In particular, Kuwwat corporation produced 11417,5 million Kw/h of electric power, up 10% on 2003. The export of electricity grew 2,3 times due to construction of Southwest Power Supplying infrastructures (Turkmenistan - Iran - Turkey).

Turkmendokunkhimiya (Turkmen fertilizers) state concern, which incorporates the Turkmenabat chemical enterprise and Maryazot enterprise that ensure the major volume of production, increased output of ground sulfur by 129%, of phosphoric fertilizers in real terms by 22%, of nitrogen fertilizer by 1% and of technical iodine by 4%.

In 2004, the light industry reported high growth rates in production of washed wool (122%), silk fabrics (137%), cotton fabrics (146%), carpets and carpet products (117%), non-woven materials (2,3 times), technical cotton wool (189%), garments (119%), footwear (122%). Growth in production of cotton yarn (112%), knit fabrics (107%), knit products (105%), hosiery production (101%) and leather goods (111 %) was also reported.

In 2004, enterprises of the Association of food industry increased food production by 26% on 2003. The robust dynamics was mainly due to high growth rates (130 %) in production of seed oil.

Significant results were also achieved in production of other types of agricultural production: in particular, production of meat (in real terms) increased by 9%, of milk - by 10%, of eggs - by 15%. At the same time, cattle stock rose by 2%, sheep and goat stock - by 9% and poultry - by 7 % in the country, as a whole.

Good growth rates were also noted in production of fruits and berries (up 12%) and grape (up 12%).

It should be noted that 88% of vegetables, 89% of melons, 99% of potato, 84% of fruit and berries products and 66% of grape were produced by the private sector.

In 2004, the volume of goods transportation by all types of transportation means in Turkmenistan reached 534 million tons, which is 6% more than in 2003. The volume of passenger transportation was 892,5 million people, up 9%. At the same time, the volume of air transportation did not change.

Enterprises of the Ministry of Communication of Turkmenistan provided 20% more services than in 2003. Rendering of communication services to the population increased by 23 %.

The stable development of the national economy enables the government to increase expenditures on implementation of social programs, the review of Turkmenmillihasabat stressed.
