A solemn ceremony marking the US Peace Corps's 46th Anniversary and the 14th anniversary of cooperation of this humanitarian organization with the government of Turkmenistan was held at the Nissa Hotel in Ashgabat on March 1.
As the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports, Turkmenistan's Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov attended the ceremony. During the event Rashid Meredov read President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov's letter of congratulation to the Peace Corps.
Speaking at the ceremony, the US Peace Corps Director in Turkmenistan, William Mayer, said that some 500 volunteers had been involved in implementing humanitarian programmes in Turkmenistan since 1993. American volunteers provided assistance in training of specialists in education and healthcare and promoted the expansion of friendly relations between the peoples of two countries.
A slide-show demonstrating the US Peace Corps volunteers' activities in Turkmenistan was organized within the framework of the event. An information fair was held in the end of the official part of the ceremony. The participants and guest of the ceremony got acquainted with programmes and projects implemented in various humanitarian spheres by international organization accredited to Turkmenistan.
