As the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports referring to the press service of the head of state, Turkmen president Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov signed the decree "On improvement of education system in Turkmenistan."
According to the document, starting from 1 September of the 2007-08 academic year, the following terms of education are to be introduced: ten years at secondary schools, five years at high educational institutions and six years at medical educational institutions and at some arts institutions.
The decree also orders the establishment of a working group consisting of representatives of relevant ministries and establishments who will have to prepare necessary methodological materials in 3 months and submit them to the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan for approval. The Ministry of economy and finance of Turkmenistan was instructed to make necessary amendments to the state budget for 2007 in accordance with the decree.
Deputy prime-ministers of Turkmenistan were charged with overlooking the implementation of the decree.
According to another decree signed today by the Turkmen president, amendments were made to paragraph 1 of Article 13 of the law of Turkmenistan "On education in Turkmenistan". The new version of this article says: "The 10-year secondary education, a fundamental basis of education, provides citizens of Turkmenistan with an opportunity to receive comprehensive knowledge in accordance with the requirements of time. It allows them to develop creative abilities and enhance their cultural level and physical training."
