As the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports, a roundtable meeting dedicated to the 60th anniversary of UNICEF was held in the Turkmen capital. Members of the national parliament, heads of ministries and establishments, heads of UN agencies accredited to Ashgabat - UNDP, UNHCR and other - discussed issues related to UNICEF cooperation with the government of Turkmenistan.
According to the State news service (TDH), in his opening speech, head of UNICEF office Mahboob Sharif noted that "Turkmenistan, being the active and consistent partner of UNICEF, has made significant progress in such important sphere as ensuring the rights and defending the interests of children." A report on implementation by Turkmenistan of the provisions of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was presented to the forum participants. As is known, Turkmenistan was the first in Central Asia to sign and ratify this document in 1993. UNICEF was the first UN agency to open its office in Turkmenistan. The forum discussed the work of UNICEF in Turkmenistan, listened to presentations on various aspects and priority areas of bilateral cooperation. A wide range of issues on implementation of joint projects in protection of children's health, quality education, the social program "Children friendly policy" and other were reviewed. Summing up the discussions, the forum participants highly estimated the progress made by UNICEF and Turkmen government in implementing joint projects and outlined further areas of partnership. | |||
