Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov signed a resolution authorizing the Ministry of motor transportation of Turkmenistan to act as a customer in the project for modernization of 1,424.2 km of roads with artificial facilities on them to meet the first technical category standards. The roads will have two lanes - each 12.25-metre wide and separated by a dividing strip and supplied with lightning in inhabited localities.

As the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports, the roads specified in the document are the three main motor roads of state importance. These include: 225.5-km Ashgabat-Mary road; 46-km Ashgabat-Turkmenbasi road; 81-km Ashgabat-Dashoguz road in Ahal province; 397-km Ashgabat-Turkmenbasi road in Balkan province; 265-km Dashoguz-Ashgabat road in Dashoguz province; 126-km Turkmenabat-Mary road; 35.7-km Turkmenabat-Farap road in Lebap province; 119-km Mary-Ashgabat road; 129-km Mary-Turkmenabat road in Mary province.
