Turkmenistan prohibited imports of vehicles converted from right-hand drive into left-hand drive.

Turkmen president Saparmurat Niyazov signed a resolution to this effect, the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports.

At the same time, the vehicles passing through the territory of Turkmenistan in transit to a third country would be exempt from this ban.

Converted left-hand-drive vehicles, imported mainly from the UAE, have recently been in great supply in Turkmenistan due to their fairly cheap prices. However, according to the traffic police, accidents involving exactly such vehicles have increased lately.
