The World Health Organization (WHO) has official recognized Turkmenistan as the country free from malaria. The Special Certificate on conferring this status has been awarded to the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan.
As noted by the State News Agency of Turkmenistan (TDH), Turkmenistan is the first country among 53 countries belonging to the European Region of WHO, which was awarded the certificate on malaria eradication.
WHO's decision to include Turkmenistan in the list of countries where malaria has been eliminated was preceded by a series of expert inspections conducted by research groups of this well-respected international organization, the agency said.
Turkmenistan's status as free from malaria will be celebrated during the 64th Assembly of the World Health Organization in May next year.
