Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have all the opportunities to increase mutual trade, investments, implementation of joint projects in various industries, find new promising areas of joint activities. This confidence was expressed by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov during the talks with his Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov in Ashgabat on October 19. The Turkmen leader called for the active involvement in this work of private entrepreneurs from both sides, providing them with full support from the government bodies.
According to Islam Karimov, the trade turnover between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, despite the unfavorable external economic conditions in 2009, increased by 40 percent and reached nearly US $ 200 million. The President of Uzbekistan supported the idea to establish mutually beneficial partnerships in the energy sector.
The sides singled out the development and deepening of contacts in the sphere of construction and production of construction materials, transport and communications, textile, chemical industry, agriculture and tourism as the priorities of the Turkmen-Uzbek economic relations.
Particular attention was paid to issues of security, combating and taking joint measures to combat such threats and challenges as terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and organized crime.
Following the meeting, the sides signed the Joint Turkmen-Uzbek Declaration and Programme of Cooperation in Cultural and Humanitarian sphere for 2011-2013.
As Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted speaking to reporters after the talks, the distinctive features of partnership between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are "equality, mutual respect, openness and trust, mutual understanding of the importance of further strengthening the ties of friendship and fruitful partnership between the two brotherly countries and peoples."
"Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are united in their desire to be closer to each other," the President of Uzbekistan said in turn.
Islam Karimov invited Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to visit Uzbekistan at any time. Today, the two presidents will visit the Festival of Turkmen-Uzbek Friendship which is under way these days in the Turkmen city of Dashoguz near the Turkmen-Uzbek border.
