Turkmenistan considers it expedient to look for ways to headquarter the UN specialized agencies in Central Asia and Caspian basin region. They would participate in addressing such serious environmental issues as saving the Aral Sea and rehabilitation of the Caspian Sea's unique natural wealth.
As President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at the 65th session of the UN General Assembly, it is necessary to begin work, already now, on creating a special international expert group, which, in cooperation with the UN and its agencies, could prepare a comprehensive international legal instrument for saving the Aral Sea.
The Turkmen side also expressed hope for active work of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in the region and proposed to consider the possibility of opening a regional office of UNEP in Ashgabat.
As regards the issues concerning water resources, Turkmenistan proposes to solve them on the basis of generally recognized norms of international law, taking into account the interests of all countries in the region and with the active participation of the international community through the United Nations and other recognized international organizations, the president said.
