The Mejlis of Turkmenistan is going to develop a system of parliamentarism in line with best international practices. In this regard, the Mejlis is looking for the possibilities of introducing modern information technologies in the work of the parliament. This issue was one of the focuses of a seminar on international parliamentary development practices conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for members and staff of the Mejlis.
According to a press release issued by UNDP, the seminar was conducted by the UNDP international consultant, Ms. Anita Dudina, who visited Ashgabat to support parliamentary development efforts in Turkmenistan. She updated members and staff of the Mejlis on current trends in modern parliamentary activities and effective practices and procedures of the legislative work in some countries, namely the Republic of Latvia, Sweden and the USA.
The seminar also discussed the importance of information and research support to MPs in their daily parliamentary activities through web-sites, e-libraries, research centers.
The outcomes of the seminar were appreciated by Deputy Chairperson of the Mejlis Mr. Kasym Babayev. According to him, the seminar gave way to successive capacity development activities within the framework of cooperation between UNDP and the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.
