The number of subscribers of cellular communication company "Altyn Asyr" of the state-owned Turkmentelekom company reached about half a million, a double increase year-on-year. According to the company, this has been achieved primarily by expanding the coverage of the cellular communication, which now can be accessed in remote villages of Turkmenistan.
The national operator has also increased the types of services to its users. For example, starting from early 2010 the subscribers can use services of the third generation of UMTS (3G) standard, which provides high speed data transmission over the Internet.
According to estimates by Altyn Asyr specialists, the introduction of new services and further expansion of the network will soon bring the number of users to one million subscribers.
It should be recalled that along with Altyn Asyr operator cellular services of GSM standard are provided by Russian company "MTS", whose subscribers in Turkmenistan have totaled 1.82 million as of 28 February 2010.
