Turkmenistan summed up the results of elections to local self-governance bodies - Gengeshi, which took place on 26 July. According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), of 12450 registered candidates 6218 were elected as members of Gengeshi. They include 1097 elected members of Akhal province, 469 elected members of Balkan province, 1442 elected members of Dashoguz province, 1439 elected members of Lebap province, and 1771 elected members of Mary province.
It should be recalled that the turnout of voters in all provinces totaled 95.7 per cent. Two and more candidates stood for election to Gengeshi in all constituencies. A candidate was considered elected if he obtained more than 50 percent of votes. Monitoring of the pre-election process was conducted by more than 1,5 thousands domestic observers.
Repeat elections will be held to Koiten Gengeshi of Koytendag district in Lebap province, where none of the three candidates secured 50 percent of votes. Repeat elections will be also held to Galaymor Gengeshi of Serhetabat district in Mary province, where one of the two candidates dropped out of elections.
According to the CEC, the majority of elected members of Gengeshi are villagers, skilled professionals from different sectors of the national economy, as well as teachers, doctors, civil servants, religious leaders and activists of social organizations and associations. It is noted that among the newly elected members of Gengeshi there are representatives of different nationalities residing in Turkmenistan.
It was also for the first time that, under the new law, persons who are kept in places of pretrial incarceration and restrained by criminal procedures or administrative coercion or punishment, took part in the voting.
