Turkmen sportsmen have wrapped up their Olympic programme at the 2008 Olympic Games. The 7th place won by weightlifter Tolkunbek Hudayberdiyev, 22, native of Gurbansoltan Eje district, has been the best result demonstrated by the Turkmen team. He came with a total score of 288 kg beating by 4 kg his own record that he set up at the last Asian championship in the city of Kanazava, Japan.
Let us remind you that the Turkmen Olympic team consists of 10 people. These are weightlifters Umurbek Bazarbayev and Tolkunbek Hudaybergenov (62 kg each), boxer Aliasker Bashirov (up to 62 kg category), judoists Nasiba Surkiyeva (up to 77 kg category) and Guvanch Nurmukhammedov (up to 66 kg category), athletes Valentina Nazarova (100 meters sprint) and Amanmurat Hommadov (hammer-throwing), swimmers Andrey Molchanov (50 meters free style) and Olga Khachatryan (100 meters free style), and Ekaterina Arabova (pneumatic rifle shooting from 10 meter distance). The Olympic Games in Beijing were the first Olympics for seven of them.
